A panel discussion on the Uyghur Genocide, Ilham Tohti, and Gulshan Abbas was organized as part of the Forum 2000 events in Czechia, where issues of freedom, democracy, and human rights are discussed.

On the initiative of the Ilham Tohti Initiative, in cooperation with the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences and the Czech think tank Sinopsis, a panel discussion on the Uyghur Genocide, Ilham Tohti and Gulshan Abbas was held as part of the Forum 2000 events in Prague, Czechia, which started on October 13, 2024, discussing freedom, democracy and human rights issues.

Ondřej Klimeš, research fellow at the Oriental Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, moderated the panel, which took place today, October 14. Panelists included Miriam M. Lexmann, Member of the European Parliament; Enver Can, President of the Ilham Tohti Initiative; Rushan Abbas, Executive Director of the Campaign for Uyghurs; Jewher Ilham, Forced Labor Project Coordinator of the Workers’ Rights Consortium; and Abduweli Ayup, founder of the UyghurYar Foundation.

The panel discussed the Uyghur genocide in general, highlighted the European Parliament’s recent resolution on unjustly imprisoned Uyghurs, and emphasized the wider targeting of intellectuals as part of China’s efforts to erase Uyghur identity. In this context, the focus was on the unjust imprisonment of Ilham Tohti and Gulshan Abbas. Jewher Ilham and Enver Can focused particularly on Ilham Tohti.

Honoured to have participated at a Forum2000 discussion about the PRC crimes against humanity committed against Uyghurs. We must continue to speak out against the crimes committed every day and hold the CCP accountable,” said Miriam M. Lexmann.

Plaques Presented to Miriam Lexmann and Dr. Ondrej Klimeš

MEP Miriam Lexmann was sanctioned by the Chinese government for her special efforts on human rights, especially on the Uyghur issue.

Dr. Ondrej Klimeš organized the meeting of the Czech Senate in April, where a resolution on Uyghurs was adopted, and helped to organize the subsequent panel discussion.

At the end of the panel, Enver Can, on behalf of the Ilham Tohti Initiative, thanked MEP Miriam M. Lexmann and academic Dr. Ondřej Klimeš for their efforts in defending the rights of Uyghurs and presented them with a plaque.
